![]() ![]() ![]() Those who like to embrace the spookiness of tales that offer chills through unexplained sounds, and enjoy the claustrophobic effect thus created, can give this movie a try. The ending also could have been better, as the present one leaves the audience wondering why this wasn’t arrived at, sooner. The jump scares are interesting, but at times they become repetitive and even predictable. The movie also makes one wonder whether it is left to the audience to decide whether the depressed inhabitants of the house are hallucinating the strangeness they witness around them. It’s their powerful expressions that give the nightmare-inducing effects of the paranormal tale to the audience, more than the events around them. Though it’s all staple horror film elements, thanks to the performance of the lead actors – Revathy and Shane Nigam – one stays enticed till the last moment of the film to see how things turn out for this family in distress. Many things in the story can be termed incomplete and dated by today’ standards and saturated with cliches. Nothing that the movie offers to sprinkle frights across its narrative - from the jump scares, self-moving furniture, eerie wailing noises, the unnatural scary elements that run amok, handed down tales of horror and insanity, dark and spooky rooms, wide-open eyes or scary dark silhouettes – are things we haven’t seen before. To make matters worse, things suddenly start going downhill in the house they stay too. The grandmother’s death further impairs the already troubled mother-son bond, as both of them slide into depression. Director Rahul Sadasivan’s Bhoothakalam confines its characters, on and off, in eerie night settings to unravel a handful of issues that they are facing, both psychological and otherwise.Ī young D Pharm graduate who is on the lookout for a job, Vinu stays with his mom and grandmother, both of whom suffer from various ailments.
